The City of Tampa is the largest city in Hillsborough
County, the county seat and the third most populous city in
Florida. Located on the west coast of Florida approximately
200 miles northwest of Miami, 180 southwest of Jacksonville,
and 20 miles northeast of St. Petersburg.
The population of the City represents approximately
one-third of the total population of Hillsborough County.
Tampa's economy is founded on a diverse
base that includes tourism, agriculture, construction,
finance, health care, government, technology, and the port
of Tampa. Contributing to the success of our community is
the way businesses, City government, and citizens’ work
together to make Tampa a better place to live.
Tampa's port is now
the seventh largest in the nation with active operating
cruise lines and a commercial shrimp trade that supplements
turn of the century phosphate shipping.
The military has also had an ongoing role in Tampa's
development. The city was the primary outfitting and
embarkation port for U.S. troops bound for Cuba during the
Spanish-American War. Today the U.S. Operations Command is
headquartered nearby at
MacDill Air Force Base.
Tampa’s
downtown business district has grown phenomenally since the
1960s. Major banks and increasing number of other
corporations occupy 150 year old brownstones, retrofitted
for today’s needs; beside modern architectural towers that
hover high above the bay.
The
Tampa Convention Center,
overlooking the Hillsborough River, offers meeting
facilities and features an erupting fire and water
sculpture.
